Otherthinker
'I cannot teach anybody anything,
I can only make them think.'
- Socrates
It's okay to be different;
everything on Earth is strange
to everything else.
The quest for understanding
is the electrical bridge
within that formless gap
which luminesces
and grows experience
through learning and trying to envision
what seems nebulous at best.
The mind needs observed differences
to expand its bank of experience
and to learn to distinguish
many points on a spectrum
and hear those wavelengths
as musical notes in
symphonic harmony.
To begin to piece things together
in a way that fits, and to never
stop trying is to reach others
outside our full understanding.
The misunderstood teach us
so much as they muddle along.
They open doors into rooms we
haven't explored within ourselves;
they exist in a small, dormant state
that calls to us to pay attention to it.
The power of the mind is exalted in
this challenge:
To face what we fear and/or avoid;
the truth that we are all different from
all others and no one is the better or the worse.
We all have unique gifts and each one
has a purpose; to find that purpose
is a lesson in resourcefulness.
Some resources are more obvious
and superficial than others;
some remain hidden in the attics
of our minds, yet underutilized.
It's okay to be an Otherthinker.

Author's Note
The term 'otherthinker' lacks a formal definition, but was mentioned in something I read as describing Socrates and his peers, Plato and Aristotle.

An excellent message overall, PR.
Especially this; it's our primary mode of learning.
"The mind needs observed differences
to expand its bank of experience"
Those who shut their minds off to the differences by simply stereotyping based on skin color, political party affiliation, etc. don't spiritually grow.

What a great comment, I love that. There is a certain willingness to learn that is needed to grow, that's so true. I think it takes bravery, also to face our own uniqueness by opening our mind to that, and especially for artists and writers in expressing their true selves :)

Actually I was writng this more as a positive support piece for the comp, there are some amazing entries chronicling real struggles with autism, I was amazed. I helped get #autism approved so I was happy to see it being boosted, thanks for participating and the encouragement :)

I am so glad you referenced 'Otherthinker'. I could not remember where I had heard the term before. There are so many people, some products of their environment/other not, who define what they feel is normal despite "normal" differences. I have often contended that those who deviate from the categorized definition of normal exist to challenge our way of thinking; and, to remind us that humans are not cookie cutters. There is something to be learned from everything and one. We just have to be willing to learn it without attempting to stuff it in our box; or, discard it as trash if it doesn't fit.
Enjoyed the thought-provoking nature of this. Best of luck in the comp.

I read this term, 'otherthinkers', in an article about the era of the scientists Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, but I couldn't find it again to put a link to it. I wanted to write this as a support piece for the autismatic comp. I was just reminded of 'paper dolls' as a child, and how they kind of bothered me, you fold paper and cut once and get a whole bunch exactly the same. Not a great symbol for people, and the cookie-cutter as well..
Thanks so much for reading and the great thoughts :)

The voice is so intimately rendered. Such plain and gentle candor. You denude the great mess of our strivings into this clear message that is so engaging. Beautiful work PR. Namaste.

Re: Re. Otherthinker
I'm so glad you highlighted this line, because it, to me represents poets and poetry as well as people. When I read and study a poet, it feels like entering a new room within myself that has lied dormant waiting to be opened. Learning just feels that way and I'm so glad it made you think and was a teaching moment..
Thanks so much for the RL add and enlightening comment, it was great to hear :)

This is very beautiful. It might be specifically about autism, but I think it can also represent anyone who thinks differently in general. It made me feel better about my quirks. Thank you for sharing, I loved it!

Re: Re. Otherthinker
I'm so glad you loved it, I wrote this without specifically mentioning autism, in part because I am from an older generation and that diagnosis was rarely mentioned even if observed when I was in school. There was no diagnoses for 'quirks', so I had to learn acceptance of my own and others, especially in the climate of misunderstanding that surrounded it. This was a way to find meaning and sense in that sharing, and to support the comp..
Thanks so much for the profound thoughts and RL add :)
