my thinking rock
makes zero mock
under the sweetwood tree
expectant sits
his selfless wits
content to wait for me
to bring my grief
to sweet relief
poured out like healing oil
upon each tear
that trickles there
when friends from me recoil
my hiding rock
protects my stock
when life is torn from me
earth’s emptiness
dare not possess
the shred of sanity
that lingers still
despite the kill
that leaves me penniless
when wicked pain
drives me insane
my rock is faithfulness
my solid rock
my ancient lock
my deepest secrets guard
upon this dome
i build my home
when fate knocks long and hard
unshakable
unbreakable
my Rock of Ages reigns
my secret dock
my building block
Whom all my life sustains

Inspiration: My wife and I had not gone early-morning walking in a while, because of overseas travel. First morning back, I jestfully greeted the rock on which I did my Tecumseh steps and asked whether it missed me. I immediately thought of my thinking rock (a place to sit and contemplate life) and my hiding rock (a secret refuge when I want to escape the world). Whims aside, I then thought of Christ, the Solid Rock, and later that day, the poem blossomed out of the experience.

Clyve, this is an absolutely worthy tribute to the classic hymn of the heart ( or that's what I call it ). Most people recall Amazing Grace as the first spiritual song they recall; I don't. For me it was Rock of Ages; therefore, I have a very special place in my heart for it. And while I have read about its origins, I can honestly say that this poetry does it so much more justice than anything I've ever read about it. The form allows it to just drip off the reader's tongue when reading. It flows like milk & honey through the spirit. Beautifully done.
