teaches wisdom
and wisdom knowledge
and knowledge understanding

understanding
is not a mental
but a physical
phenomenon
that warms its hands
in the gloves of mercy
and tempers justice
with grace

mercy
droppeth not
as from the skies
a hailstorm
of condescension
and self-righteousness
it is as gentle
as the dew
rising
from the humble earth
to feed a dying world

grace
keeps a watchful vigil
490 degrees
in the shade
of human transgression
its mathematical
exaction
as fluent and fluid
as the flowing river
that borders not itself
from precipice or swamp

justice
wears scant fat letters
on its name
and yet
its spirit blazes
like a flame

nobility
lacks naught
of cooling streams
him who repents
of ill
true love redeems
