the message in a bottle you're too drunk to see
I watch you become one
with the bottom of another bottle
my silence expands like eggshells waiting to crack
I stand still and hope the storm
washes over me
leaving nothing more
than yesterday's rain in its wake
I've never felt so alone
sleeping next to the ghost of you
our bodies untouching
as I wake to empty bed sheets
and you wake wherever you passed out
in the predawn light
Between daylight and darkness
you're full of unfulfilled promises
I know better than to believe
but it doesn't stop me dreaming
I'd rather keep my eyes closed
and live between the was and could have been
it's easier than accepting this bed I've made
that's somehow still ours
though I spend more time staring at empty space
than the beauty of your face
that it only seems to find peace
when you're sleeping
I watch you become one
with the bottom of another bottle
my silence expands like eggshells waiting to crack
I don't know who we are anymore
