In my experience, a significant other (male or female) does not like to be told they are jealous. It usually pisses them off. The first sign that someone is, indeed, jealous.

Jealousy is one of the worst forms of toxicity there is.  It more often than not leads to competitive behaviour which involves involving more people by 'stoking the fire' whenever the jealous person observes something, i.e. - "o O! I can't believe they said that to you!"  It's very sad people don't realize their own worth unless measured against another's.  And you are right- the first sign of jealousy is becoming defensive when confronted with the potential of its existence.
