The First Time I Saw You

I was in a dream
The first time I saw you.
Cold was the day,
Your voice was thunder,
And my heart lifted in the snow.

I couldn’t tell if I was alive.
I had never lived before;
Until I saw your sweet face
With eyes like embers.
I never saw a sight so pure.
And when I make you smile
I never knew a higher climb.

Since the first time I saw you,
Since the sky turned from black to blue.
Since the fields first dawned all of their green.
Since the hills first rolled to the sea,
When the mountains were yet to be,
I’ve longed to kiss you and hold you close
And give all the heart of me.

Come to the window, watch all the stars
That I’ll weave from the gentlest light
To shine in your little garden:
Rubies by day and diamonds by night.

Come with me to tomorrow.
With your hand over mine
Watch the doves fly over the trees.
Since the first time I saw you,
I’ve been in a dream far away
And I want to wake in your arms
For centuries, as our worlds unfold.
