Another lifetime

If this was another lifetime, oh how I think we would dance.
There would be endless fun to be had.
We could each be that person who lightens the load.
With you in my life, I would rarely be sad.

If this was another lifetime, I should like to walk and talk of anything and everything for hours.
When we were apart we would call or write at the same time each day.
About daily frivolities one minute and philosophical debate the next.
Yet there’d be comfort in quiet when we’d not need to say.

But here lies the problem: the lifetime I speak of is not now and my mind is full of torturous ifs.
Yearning for something that will never be real.
I’m not so naive that I believe it could happen.
These thoughts keep me hopeful yet pain I do feel.
