What We Need Is Here (Found Within)
The land in the eye is clear
not clouded, like the
numerical sum of its parts
Here, in the ancient waters
free of tallied reasons,
free in the mind's vastness.
Fearing not the infinite,
Heaven within The Earth
hides in a hill, unremarkable;
Faith appears above
as a bird, flying
into a sky which closes
Around it hiding reasons
to try for that which it needs.
Its abandon, it finds,
is hidden but everywhere,
embedded in everything.

This is definitely indicative of Wendell Berry's love of the land and its mysticism, PR. He and I share a lot of ideals about global warming and what's important. I hope you extend your research of him to his essays as well. I think you would immensely enjoy them.
It's abandon, it finds,
its* abandon. . .?

Thanks so much, I fixed the error, I just looked up his essays and found a lot of interesting articles about them and comments, he's really popular and I would like to read more about global warming and what he thought of it..

He was definitely an advocate of the family farm verses large agribusiness. He felt them to be the foundation of our society in many ways. I am happy you'll be reading some of them.

"The land in the eye is clear

I have to say, this caused me to think of a blind spot resulting from a cataract of sorts and left me with the impression of someone who could not see the Bigger Picture. it works to the advantage of the poem.
Well done, PR. Thanks for tackling the comp and good luck!

Great comp entry, PR. I love the way the poem gently bounces between the physical and numinous worlds, thereby capturing an essence of Wendell.

Thanks so much, I loved that quality of his poems, the analytical eye as part of a whole person seeing beauty in the land, that tale of his father throwing the entire tobacco crop away because it wasn't going to sell was part of my inspiration. I think his poems were a way of coping with such harsh truths..
