Yours Forever

I'm not known as a leaver.
I'm known as a loyal dog.
One that stays even if mistreated.
Even if it means heartache for me,
I'll still wag my tail for you.
I'll come when called upon.
That's mostly due to my naivety,
Me not realizing what's about to happen.
So when you asked me if I'd ever leave you,
If I would stay with you always,
I laughed because it seemed absurd to ask me that.
It screamed déjà vu.
So loudly in the back of my mind.
It's not the first time I hear this scream.
I laughed because I tried to drown it.
And convince myself that you were different.
No, I'd never leave you.
Yes, I'll stay with you always.
But maybe I ought to be the one asking these questions.
Maybe I ought to consider that leaving is best.
It's what most people do.
I know I'm not a leaver.
I'm not so sure about you.
