Summertime
I’ll play Porgy today
and you be Bess
my useless legs and big heart
the rolling cart
your cocaine dressed
with hurricanes of catfish row
and a selfish Crown
what a mess
but it aint necessarily so
you know
‘god made us both cripples’
we both want to be Bess
is it lonelier
mending fisherman’s nets
or ducking at low flying buzzards
‘Boss dat bird mean trouble! ‘
you’ve run away to New York
with Sportin’ Life
but tomorrow its my turn
to be Bess
and you be Bess
my useless legs and big heart
the rolling cart
your cocaine dressed
with hurricanes of catfish row
and a selfish Crown
what a mess
but it aint necessarily so
you know
‘god made us both cripples’
we both want to be Bess
is it lonelier
mending fisherman’s nets
or ducking at low flying buzzards
‘Boss dat bird mean trouble! ‘
you’ve run away to New York
with Sportin’ Life
but tomorrow its my turn
to be Bess
