Vernal amours

We were young and fresh and new
We were moonstruck, sun kissed, and heaven sent.
We kissed deep and long
With a tentative touch
Flexible fingers crawled curiously
Over sensitive skin.

If I say we were sensational
I would mean we were caught up in the sensations
A tactile inquisitiveness
Seeking instantaneous permanence

An emotional flowering
As I sniffed your scented bloom
Which was earthy and not quite sweet.

I felt you like sunshine
Or maybe wind, if I think on it,
Sometimes you would blow strong or cold
And I could never fathom your seasons

Once under the shade of a maple tree in the park; my head in your lap,
I contemplated forever
But then it started raining
And we went back to my place
Where we immersed ourselves in right now
And I never told you

Sometimes I still wonder what became of our spring
When did we, like the monument in the park, start to crack
Now it has plants growing on it
Forty feet in the air
And we’ve fallen apart.

And now you have a new person
Whose head you hold in your lap
And I’m finally taking dancing lessons
Like I had always wanted to.

I still cherish the things we did
The places we went and the things I learned from you.
And if I happen to repeat some of them
I suppose she’ll never know.
