He should have screamed. He knew he wanted to but the drugs in his system made it impossible. He was fully aware of his surroundings so he knew he wasn’t dead, felt his body be lifted from the sitting position, remembered being carried up the hill, sensed the noose being placed around his neck and heard the gurgle of his last breath as the chair was swiftly kicked away.
The body of Deacon Avery Levy was discovered at sunrise swinging from the limb of a Rosebud tree and covered in the pink of its foliage. Dressed in full attire the deacon had died clutching his beloved rosary beads. By the formation of his mouth it could be assumed that he had been praying until the very end. The most noticeable thing about his body was the single word written across his robes.
