birdsong
Are not five sparrows sold for two cents?
Yet not one of them is forgotten before God. Luke 12:6 (NASB)
wonder what little birds
say to each other
when they tweet-tweet
in treetop branches
and when they sing
their lovesongs
do they make
the lyrics rhyme
or fix their verse in time
upon the changing
metres
of the breeze
do they rehearse
war chants
for leery men
with traps and cages
and when they hurt
do their sad hearts
bleed
like mine
to cool their rages
and do they pray
for motherbirds
whose eggs
are gobbled up
in infancy
do they weep
long
and do their
feathers droop
in their despair
do they rejoice
when enemies
defeated
by their perch
give up the chase
to seek
some other prey
and when they die
do their survivors
find the place they lie
and mark their graves
with flowers
and celebrate
their anniversary…
