dearest Gahddess I've been in that position here on site before
and it was very uncomfortable feeling like I couldn't just be myself
with the opposing parties...

Seeing it for what it is, i.e. - fear, helps, Gahddess.   Those who spread vicious rumours for the purpose  of winning favorable opinion are operating solely out of fear.  They're afraid of what people think, and need sides to feel secure and "right".  

Even if you're the target of the political conflict, seeing it for what it is helps.
