Fall of Metered Words: Day Twenty-Six
(sestina)
How deep the math and structure take my mind.
How swift the fall of metered words define.
In sounds that sing in evening’s colored airs,
In taste of lines that only tasting bares
The poets’ phrase that only shapes can hold
In spoken nights and ranting silence told.
How many times her luscious tales I’ve told,
That seep like lovers’ wells to fill my mind,
That whisper tight like muscled want takes hold.
Words bound to Love that harness their define
In dancing tongues that silken gateway bares
With scents of sea and spice on subtle airs.
Like Bach and Mozart graced in music’s Airs
Or Hemingway declared in war bells told,
The artist’s canny art its climax bares
That will bring rain in keen observer’s mind,
That opens and extends in realm’s define
And fills with full express this canny hold.
She open, willing, with her verse took hold,
And filled the space, a moon in midnight air.
To quickly shape and better my define.
How swift she came, in breathless rushing told,
Her alterations’ better, moves her mind,
How swift, in joining, joined ‘position bares.
Then, lovers from all time, our joined soul bares,
And seeks to pull all congress from its hold.
For we pursued to climax in our mind,
And send our showered verse in lovers’ airs,
Like others, in their po’ms, love’s spendings told,
Such spending power did our join define.
It was “sestina” that my wants defined,
As she, her challenges to such, laid bare.
Yet such a tale she shaped, in such words told,
And such a grace expressed, my want took hold,
Like vapors stunned, like Southern lady’s “airs”,
She rocked and reeled my wanton poet’s mind.
May these poor words define what still has hold,
That my heart bares, at times, steals my words’ airs,
A love that’s told in congress of two minds
