Permutation
( a Quatern )
I haven’t given it a second thought.
It’s dry and blustery, the winter’s night,
With never snow or rain the way it ought.
I’m definite that Nature’s got it right.
I stare up at the glare, the ceiling fan,
I haven’t given it a second thought.
There sits alone my supper in a can,
And yesterday’s old leftovers I bought.
I listen to the gusts of winter’s rot,
In ev’ry permutation screamed in vain.
I haven’t given it a second thought,
A flicker on the edge my darkest bane.
They say, never go on into the light.
I ask of it what have you gone & wrought
Betwixt a future fading from my sight?
I haven’t given it a second thought.
