Inside Dog on a Rainy Night
The dog with a sock in his mouth
Stands in front of the door
A clear signal he wants out
I open the door and step into
The damp black night
To the sound of frogs chirping
And rain dripping from the branches
I hold the dog clip in my hand
Pete backs away having changed his mind
“Come on Pete” I say
“You gotta go out,
It’s a dog’s life and that’s your life.”
Reluctantly he comes to me
I clip the ring on his collar
And scoot him out the door.
In a few minutes there is a scratch
At the French doors and Pete
Is peering through the window
I open the door and he steps in
As I greet him in my best
British accent
“Ello Pete! It’s a dreary night out
To be traveling about.
Don’t ya think?”
He is not the least bit amused
As I unclip him
And shakes off the rain
Rubs himself against the sofa
Before he hops up, lies down
And proceeds to lick himself.
“Alright then mate, ‘ave it your way.
Cheers!”
