before the final descent
We walked together in the sun.
I pointed out pretty flowers, chirping birds
Here & there…
No response.
And that was ok.
Wondering, who am I to you now?
Conversation gone, but still the instincts of a host –
Ever gracious, offering me a taste of his half-eaten cereal.
Regrets on my end, for never trying to discover the man he was.
But for him? No regrets, only this moment.
And then, the next.
A life of integrity leaves no room for regret.
Decisions were made in good will and honesty.
Imperfections in parenting? – Sure, there were flaws.
But all I feel is
compassion for the pressures of living an adult life,
deep sadness for missed opportunities,
And love.
