Image for the poem The marathon is on

The marathon is on

The marathon is on

Numbered bodies pack against you
While we advance towards the starting line
Bouncing up and down in your cramped space,
Listening to the nervous buzz around
The crowd counts down from ten,

Boom! Cracks the cannon signaling the start,
And the horde gushes forward.
Near the front, the runners run,
As the laggards only start to walk.
Your breathing quickens and heart pumps faster,
As you maneuver to find your pace.
“Stay relaxed,” telling you self.

Now, two miles done and
Your lungs bellow and legs pump rhythmically.
Focusing on into your body,
As you monitoring your posture and breathing,
Heart rate and stride
And tweak them to be where they need to be.
“Stay focused,” telling you’re self.

Now, five miles done and
Smile at the hurting, gasping runners
Who started out way too fast?
You smile because being been in their shoes,
Before I learned about the race
It’s all about the pacing.
“Be patient,” telling your self.

Now, ten miles done and
The first big hill is just ahead.
Relaxing your shoulders keeping your stride
To improve you’re efficiency.
Ascending lungs drink deeper
Until cresting the top and the welcome relief
“Almost halfway,” telling myself.

Now, eighteen miles down,
Time has exponentially slowed.
Sweat stings your chafed, raw skin,
Now your will must force my aching legs
To keep moving forward still
Checking your watch – barely on pace.
“Why I am doing this?” to myself.

Now, twenty-four miles done and
Physically almost there!
But, you are hurting. And hurting?
It’s desire that drives you on
And for what runs through your mind
When you finally cross the finish line?
“Almost there,” telling myself.

Now, twenty-six miles done
And the pain is so much more.
Making the last turn, picking up the pace,
As waving spectators cheer you on.
And simply keep moving your legs.
“Finish strong,” telling you’re self.

Now, across the finish line
And into the arms of volunteers
Hearing your name announced,
You check the posted time.
Achieving your goal
That sweet, yet fleeting feeling of euphoria
“Now, what’s next?” you ask you’re self
