street girl
the night was irregular
I mean it just fit tight
a new skin yet to be broke in
the same old johns cruise the Blvd.
the old whore smiled within herself
she retired
yes she finally gave up the game
left some broken hearts along the way
they would get over it
some young new thing would take her place
after all, you got to pay to play
whether it's with your heart or cold hard cash
she paid her dues out there
lost her heart to some smooth talker
with a rough looking face
used to listen to her stories
said they sounded like poetry to him
on a cold rainy night, she could hear it too
the romance of it
in love by the hour
Cinderella come morn's first blush
poof and just like that
a lonely street girl again
alone with the wind
taking her where it might lead
yes the night was irregular
the lady smiled within hugging herself tight
toasted the night that brought her here
with thoughts, it was starting to fit just right

Teaching is relational. I taught 33 years. Every day....emotions out. Fix them up, send them out....
When I retired, I went back to painting. It had taken too much to do both.
Sex workers have a similar step away, I'm sure. Gave it away....not used to keeping some. Every story is unique, but there is the similarity of the street. It takes it out of you...never enough respect....
But....oh, the stories!

Well done.....
Sobriety has several fronts.....less drama, more self-awareness...
Better sense of direction.
It may have felt boring....but you regain every day that is not nursing a hangover.
You just gained years of actually living in the moment!

Brenda, As a feminist (quelle horreur), I find the idea of sex trafficking and the commodification of women to be anathema. However it is cultural issue and therefore difficult to pin on any one individual. Poems such as these tell an inspiring tale of surmounting an enormous challenge, from the perspective of a survivor. All women are faced with difficult challenges from time to time.

The musical cadence counterpoints the sweet sadness of the whole. Engaging and evocative storytelling Brenda.

Lifetime lessons to be had there with reality smacking you in the face! Meat for the wolves, no love but abuse and lies! I’m happy you made it out Brenda!
