Aussie Rules
The crowd had all rallied ‘round
To hear the roar go up ‘round the ground ,
Two teams in battle , stood toe to toe –
Fans ,cheer-squads and leaders
Complete the show.
The umpires are out in neat pressed whites ,
Team mascots clowning in costume and tights.
With the warm up out the way
Can feel the tension in the air ,
The toss of the coin –
Are we kicking here , or there ?
The siren sounds , a deafening roar
Much louder than before.
The ball’s bounced up and
The rucks are off the floor ,
Vying for the pigskin – a tussle of the tall.
The rovers are a runnin’,they’re a fiery lot –
The good ones
Always manage to get to the spot .
The wingmen aptly named ,
For birdmen are they;
Praying on defences when
Your back’s on the play .
Forwards and backs ,pushing and shoving ,
Trying to read better the ball
When it’s farmed out from the packs .
The goal square at either end the ground
Seems the obvious place ,
For a pretty face and a straight laced ace ,
To take the screamers and kick the goals ,
A pillar of strength
and fill the holes.
In around half hour each
Four quarters do pass –
Were at that stage deep in the last ,
Time on’s runnin’ down ,
and fast !
They’re only one point down ,
There’s a change at the bench ,
‘What’s that I see’ ?
Kerley’s come out of the trench !
He runs on the field and into the fray ,
Came out with the footy
And with poise took aim.
Let go a torpedo ,
Went eighty metres
Through the high diddle diddle ,
Watched in delight or disgust –
All could do little .
As the siren sounds ,barely heard
For the roar of the crowd ,
Raised on shoulders ,
He’s done us proud !
Winning fans heads in clouds.
Opposing team ,
Heads down in pain ,
Yet soaking up the atmosphere
Of a hard fought game –
‘The Game’ , not one for fools…
This Great game of ours called
AUSSIE RULES!
