heaping piles of junk

piles and piles
of boxes and files
all over the floor
and into the aisles

covered with dust
and cobwebs and grime
i’d throw them away
if i had more time

except for that jacket
it belonged to my son
and one of those crockpots
i’m not sure which one

the hacksaw can stay
i might use it one day
and also this snow globe
from monterey bay

maybe tomorrow
I’ll get to this stuff
right now i’ll consider
the plan is enough

that lavender necktie
will be back "in" someday
my grandmother’s kettle?
I can’t throw that away

a box full of sea shells
my daughter gave me
she collected those things
when she was just three

i guess it won’t hurt
to keep them all longer
I’ll throw them away
when i’m feeling stronger

Author's Note
Too many people I know have too much stuff. Often it's pure materialism, the idea that owning "stuff" makes a person happy. Sometimes, there are deeper issues related to the lack of meaningful attachments to other humans. Hoarders attach their feelings to material objects when they have lost, or never had, such attachments to others. I tried to show that in this poem.
