Death at the coal mine
July 15th 1989 started like any other day for John.
Although he was only fifteen years old, John's grand
father trusted him to drive his pick up truck to the
old coal mine to meet his friend Eddy for lunch.
John's Grandfather had warned him to drive a lot safer than
usual due to he was going to be hauling some mining
equipment that day to be dropped off before noon.
Little did John that the equipment was explosives.
One crate of one hundred forty four twelve inch pipe
bombs with fuses. The other box was fourteen inch pipe
bombs with a detonator caps and fuses. After John made
the delivery, he joined Carl the foreman for a cigarette.
While they were talking, John noticed one of the miners
carrying both boxes of explosives towards the shaft. He said,
"Hey Carl, is it standard practice to bring both
boxes of explosives in to the shaft?"
Carl said, "No. Why?"
John said, That damned fool just did."
They both approached
the shaft and Carl Said,"Wait up top by my office.
If I'm
not back in forty five minutes, Come get me."
Right then a massive explosion happened one and a
half miles below the surface at the shaft bottom.
Twenty men lost their lives that day. The police,
fire department and paramedics arrived and cleared
the scene. Rob the deputy sheriff and John's cousin
approached John and said, "Just what the hell happened?"
John said, "I don't know what happened. All I know is I
dropped off the explosives used in the mine accident.
So what is the maximum sentence for murder?" Rob said,
"I know you're innocent If you tell any other police
officer, they'll hang you for multiple crimes. Such
as driving without a license, transporting explosive
material without proper permits and accessory to mass
murder." John said, "You're insane!" Rob said, "You're
the one who is insane if you go to the police." After
Rob left, John and Carl were looking at the shaft when
they heard a hellish scream. It was the scream you would
expect from a man dying in extreme pain and fear, almost animalistic.
The scream rose through octave after octave, coming to a freezing point, cutting through the breeze like
a red hot diamond edged knife cutting melted butter. After a
few seconds it passed through a bass register, humming like a monstrous bee.
It was followed by insane laughter. John and Carl got in their cars and left, never to return to the mine.
