To Be Touched

Behind a smile
She is tormented
Doubting herself endlessly
Suspicion has become a lonely friend
Pretty words and promises
Leave tears in her eyes
What should bring joy
Only brings more uncertainty
He moves slowly
Almost as though he knows
She is like a deer in a field
Poised to bolt at the slightest hint of danger
He is patient
Hand out-stretched
Longing to touch her
Though not in the familiar filthy ways of men
To be touched by a virtuous hand might break her
Shatter her into a million shards of glass
That’s why she built walls to protect her heart
Her safety is an illusion
He holds the ability to heal or destroy
Does he realize his power?
If he knew just how fractured her heart is
Would he choose to stay?
