Never Meant To Be Found (Part 1)

I always knew he was the one who lived that house. I knew deep in my mind what he had done, but somehow I can't remember . . .

Everyday I would watch him stand at the edge of his yard waiting for a girl to come round the corner. He would then invite her in and near an hour later she would come out looking slightly shaken, but other times she would come out looking as she did when she went in. Why am I spying on this guy is a good question, but the reason is that something about him rings a little tiny bell in my head that I am unconsciously aware of. In my house there is a special secret window that no one knows about. When I was little, I used to go up to the 3rd floor to just look out the window and imagine what my life would be like when I got older. That was years ago, I am now 17 and live with my parents.

One day, as I was walking around the block I saw that none of his house lights were on. It was around 10:30pm and I had gotten bored so I took a walk. Technically I am not breaking any curfew rules because my parents are out celebrating their 10th year anniversary in the beautiful country Cancun. So that means I'm mostly allowed to do whatever I want whenever I want. Anyway, as I walked back onto Blue Ridge Ave. I saw some light glowing on the inside of his house and not too far from it there he was standing at the edge of his yard. My plan was to cross the street and ignore him completely but he had other plans. About 12 feet from him he decided to interfere with my plan.

"Hello, may I ask if you would like to join me for some hot chocolate and bread pudding?"

His voice was so calm and mesmerizing that I couldn't think straight and before I noticed what I was doing I was being lead into this familiar stranger's house. I wonder if his parents were home? He looked only about 17-18 years old and he had a slight english accent that made him sound older than he looked. He lead me into a comfortable brown painted kitchen.

There was a nice pan of bread pudding on the table and two different colored cups, one filled with steaming brown liquid, the other with a blue liquid. He handed me the blue cup with the brown liquid in it.

"What's this?" I asked. For all I knew it could be poison.

"It's hot chocolate. Is that okay?" he asked.

"Oh." I mumbled. I could feel the tips of my ears turning bright red. If he noticed he didn't act like it.
"So, what are you doing out so late?"

"Um, well I got bored just sitting around the house so I decided to take a walk around the block." As I looked up from my cup I saw that he was looking intensely at my face. I looked back down at the cup in my hands that was indeed hot chocolate and halfway gone. When our eyes had met I had the sudden urge to stand up and run out the door. I looked towards the door then back at my cup. His eyes were a cold ice blue. Something about those eyes are familiar but it seems that it is dangerously familiar. As if he could read my mind he then suggested that It was getting late and I should get some rest.

He walked me to his front door, all the while keeping his eyes on the ground until we were at the door.

"Hey thanks for the hot chocolate." I said.

"No problem." he said. Something about his voice was off. Right before he closed the door I looked up at him and his eyes were black! I stood there for a while even after the door was closed thinking about what I just saw, if I was just imagining it or if his eyes did just change colors.
After that I started walking around the block every night and every night he would invite me in for hot chocolate. It seemed that we had a couple things in common. We were both going to College next Fall, and we both had graduated from High school in May of this year. He said that he didn't go to college this year is because he didn't get any acceptance letters back yet. My reason for not going is because I didn't have the money for it. Hopefully by next fall I should have enough. Soon it started getting colder outside. The October wind had started to pick up and then the rain started coming down. I was just turning onto my street when the rain got thicker. It was so thick that I couldn't even see my feet much less where I was going. There he was standing at the edge of his yard holding an umbrella. With the wind blowing furiously I can't believe that it hasn't yanked it from his hands.

"Here, come on in. Your house is too far to be running to in this kind of weather. Run any further and you'll catch a fever."

I looked around for about 2 seconds and decided he was right. He led me to his house under the umbrella. I was so cold that my whole body was shaking violently.

"Th-th-thank you so much. You really didn't have to do this I could have just gone to my house."

"Oh it's no problem, you are welcome to stay here until the storm is over." As if on cue thunder cracked outside, then the power went out and didn't come back on. He lit a candle and set it on the kitchen table. The light from the flame danced around the room. The little candle made his features glow. He swept a piece of wet blonde hair back out of his face. His eyes were green this time. I had gotten used to his constant color change. He had told me earlier that week that he had multiple colored contacts and he changed them regularly. It still doesn't explain the first day I met him and his eyes went from ice blue to solid black and he was never even out of my sight.
"Sorry for the one candle, I have more upstairs." With that he left upstairs leaving the one candle sitting on the table.

Now that I actually think about it, I never really paid attention to his features. He is a pretty handsome guy. He looks like he is about 5'9'', He has natural blonde hair that reaches halfway down his ears and his original eye color is torquise. As for his physical shape he is skinny but with muscle. He says that he has never played for any kind of school extra-curricular team or non-school team. He doesn't even lift weights! How weird is that? He has a really nice tan and he has no dimples in sight. I still can't bring myself to why he looks familiar and why every time I get near him my danger sense is going nuts. He then came back with three lit candles.

"Would you like to go into the other room, there is a fire place and warm blankets?" He set each candle ways apart from each other then led me to the other room. From the looks of the room I would say it was the living room. A coffee table, one long couch, and one love-seat. You know, throughout this whole time I have met him we haven't even exchanged names.

     "Thank you...um...? " I didn't know his name.

"Oh, I apologize, my name is Demetri. Demetri Adonis." he said.

     "Thank you Demetri for everything."

"My name is Charlotte Evans." I said all confident.

     "I know."

"H-how do you know my name?" Fear flickered inside my stomach. How did he know my name? Why does every time I look into his eyes make me want to run?

"You were in the newspaper. An article about how you and a friend raised enough money to create a Float than had ran in the OctoberFest Festival." His eyes never left mine. Those rich, solid green eyes didn't look so friendly anymore. I coughed as an excuse to look away.

"You must be feeling that cold coming on." He said with his usual English tone.

I looked at the fire place which was blazing beautiful reds and oranges that reflected the leaves outside. The storm grew louder and I could hear dogs barking in the distance.
"I think it best if you stay here tonight. The storm seems like it is getting worse. It may die down in the morning."
"Yea it should be over by the morning." I looked at the clock, it was only a 7:53pm. Why was he out so early? How did he know that I was out in the rain at that time? He started pulling the seat cushions off of the couch. He saw my face, then asked if I would prefer a guest room instead.
"Um, I don't know if you want to sleep in here with the fire place or in one of the extra rooms?" He actually seemed sincere and caring. "The extra room doesn't have a fire place or anything but I could grab some blankets from the closet if that's okay?"
"I think I will go for the extra room." Like I actually wanted him to have unlimited access to where I sleep! I needed privacy and a good solid door between us. I thought I saw a glimpse of a smile before he turned away. We both heard a scratching at the front door. Demetri went to go open it without looking through the peephole first. When the door opened something small wet and sharp came bursting through.
"Ahhh! What the...?" The thing knocked me down on the ground and also knocked the wind out of me. After 3 seconds of trying to get the thing off me I realized what it was.

"Misty, get off of me!" It was none other than my wet furry fuzzball cat Misty with her claws digging in my skin. "Ow!" I tried to pry her claws from my now bleeding shoulder. Apparently that wasn't working so I tried to calming her down by softly stroking her fur and trying not to wince at the pain. Soon she was bundled against my chest inside my jacket. Poor thing she must have been still outside when I left the house. I had begged my parents to install a cat door but they said it would then invite all kinds of unwanted animals in. She must have followed my scent. Cats have a pretty good sense of smell.

"Are you okay?" I almost forgot that he was standing there. He hadn't said a word while that wet bloody reunion was happening. Why was he asking if I'm ok? Oh, my shoulder. It's still bleeding, I had ignored the pain while trying to calm down my now calmed down kitty. Now the throbbing came back.

"Ow! My I think my shoulder is bleeding."

"Here let me take a look." He pulled down my shirt collar just far enough to see the damage. "I think I have some band-aids in the kitchen." I followed him into the kitchen with my shivering kitty in my arms. He found a half-empty box of band-aids and set them down on the table.
"This may hurt just a litt..."

"OW! That burns! Ooh it's burning what did you put on it?!" That burned worse than Misty digging her claws in my shoulder.

"Calm down, that was just the peroxide. It will feel better soon." He started blowing on my shoulder to dry the peroxide enough so that the band-aids would stick. Well, I shouldn't say band-aids because it was just a really big band-aid that was probably bigger than my whole hand. It sort of reminded me of one of those big hot-cold patches that the athletes wear. My shoulder was feeling better but I still winced as he put the giant band-aid on my shoulder.

"Is that all?" Hoping there were no more harsh procedures that had to done to my shoulder.

"Yea, that's all. Feeling better?" He actually had a smile on his face. That was the first smile I had seen come from him. Was he getting a kick out of my pain? Well sor-ry for not being all brave and taking the pain like a man! We girls are different you know. We can't always hide the pain!

"Yea, I'm just tired." Thunder cracked just then and I jumped. My cat didn't even move a muscle. I swear this cat could sleep through a whole fireworks show and not twitch a muscle.

"Can Misty stay here too, just for the night?" If the cat don't stay, I don't   stay.

"Yes, you and your cat can stay for as long as you want."
"Thanks." He took me and my frizzy cat upstairs into a nice room that looked like a hotel room.

"Sorry about the temperature in here."

"Oh it's okay, it's actually pretty warm in here."

"I have an extra set of sleep wear in the closet. This used to be my sister's room, but she hasn't been here in a couple of years. You're welcome to anything."

He left the room, the door closing behind him with a soft "click". I set Misty on the bed and went to the closet and pulled out a pair of plaid pants with a matching button-up top, they both were two sizes too big. I dried the rest of myself off using the towel that he left on the dresser. I didn't feel right so I went to the bathroom that was inside of the room and took a shower.

"Uh, a hot shower was all I needed." Apparently it was all Misty needed too! One thing about my cat that is different from them all is that she is not afraid of water, how awesome is that? After we both dried up I pulled on the too big plaid pajama pants and put my Van Halen t-shirt back on. I flipped the lock on the door, turned the lights off and hopped into to the bed with Misty sleeping at my feet. Soon I was asleep. It didn't even feel like an hour had gone by when I woke up from a faint knocking on the door. I sat up knowing it was Demetri. What did he want at this time of night? It was only a quarter 'til ten what does he want?

"You can come in Demetri." He walked in wearing a pair of sweat pants and a white t-shirt. I thought I locked the door? That clinking sound must have been a key.

"Are you okay in here? I thought I heard you call me?"

"Oh, uh no, I was probably just talking in my sleep or something." Gods I cannot believe I just said that I was talking in my sleep! Great now he's gonna think that I was dreaming about him which I totally was but will never admit it!

"Oh. Well if you need anything I'm in the last room on the right." I nodded because I didn't trust my voice. He walked out of the room with what I imagined was a smile on his face. Gah! Why are all guys so giddy when they hear that someone was thinking about them! I could feel my face burning up. That didn't stop me from falling asleep
once my head hit the pillow.

Dream: Demetri was running through the forest. I could feel every eye on him. The fear on his face is maddening, he looks so scared! He's running from something. Something attacks him. "Demetri!" I yell as loud as I can but he doesn't hear me. I try to run to him but my feet are frozen. It's too dark to see what is fighting him but I hear its angry yells and it sounds like a human and I can also hear Demetri's fearful cries of frustration as he tries to fight back. "Demetri!...Demetri!..."
"Wake up, Charlotte, wake up, everything's okay."

I open my eyes and see Demetri sitting on the bed cradling me in his arms. I close my eyes and lean up against him wanting to fall asleep in his arms. We stay like that for a couple of minutes then he lays my head back against the pillow.

"Go back to sleep, it was only a dream." With that being said he left. I couldn't go back to sleep so I decided to go downstairs. I sat on the couch and watched the fire blaze with warmth. He must have come down and added some more wood to it. About half an hour later I hear soft footsteps on the stairs.

     "Couldn't sleep?"

"No, you don't mind if I stay down here do you?"

"Not at all, I'll just go back upstairs..."

"Do you mind staying down here with me?" I didn't want to be left alone, especially after that dream. I was starting to like him. Wow, never thought I would ever say that!

"Sure, why not." He grabbed two blankets off the love seat and handed one to me. Since I was sprawled against the love seat he took the long couch with the hide-a-bed, only he didn't pull the bed part out.

     "Thanks."

In a way it was kinda cute, but still a little gross. I went to the kitchen to find some paper towels and then went to go, carefully clean his mouth up before the drool dries up. I start cleaning up around his mouth and was almost finished when I hear padded feet in the kitchen.

     "Meow."

"Gods Misty, you scared the bejeebies out of me."

     "Meow."

"Shh, don't wanna wake him up." I looked down at Demetri who was still asleep and he stopped drooling yes! He is just like my cousin Jake. Instead of going back to the chair I was sleeping in I sat in front of the couch. I got really tired and dozed off.

I woke up to a soft hand stroking my hair and a warm body pressed to me. I thought it was my old boyfriend Heath, and I snuggled closer to him. I could feel him leaning his head towards mine and I reached up and pressed his lips to mine. The kiss got more intense and I reached up to pull his shirt up. When did Heath get abs? He's been working out, finally took my advice to get rid of his baby fat. I finally got his shirt off. Trying to pull a shirt off of a buff body is harder than I thought.
"Good Morning." I said talking around kissing him. He pulled his mouth away so he could talk.

     "Good Morning to you too."

I froze. I peeked through my eyelids and freaked out.

"OH MY GODS!" There laying in front of me on the couch was definitely not Heath, it was Demetri! I jumped so quick from that couch you would have needed to slow-mo it just to see me.

"Whoa sorry, did I do something wrong?" He asked sincerely.

I couldn't look at him. I crawled over to the love seat, since that jump landed me on the floor, and started crying. He walked over to me and tried to help me up but I refused to let him.

"Don't touch me!" My voice was so cracked that I could barely understand what I just said. Luckily he did. Misty walked over to me and started rubbing against my knee. I picked her up and pressed her to my chest squeezing her gently. Demetri walked into the kitchen and soon there was the fresh smell of pancakes, my favorite. No, I will not succumb to the smell of.....blueberry pancakes! Grr! He was tempting me in. He knows that I love blueberry pancakes more than anything!

"Misty, no don't go in there!" Well, apparently while I'm not giving in to sweet smelling pancakes, Misty on the other hand, just left.

"Traitor." I mumbled. What time is it anyway? I look around and find a clock on the mantle. It's only 2am. Why is he cooking then if it is just barely after midnight?

"You're welcome to come and join us if you are hungry!" He says from the kitchen.

Ugh! I'm still tired so I go upstairs and walk into the nearest open door I could find which is the last door at the end of the hallway. I go in and curl up on the bed and sleep. I didn't get much sleep, I kept dreaming of blueberry pancakes, they smelled so good that they seemed real and right in front of me that I woke up starving. Hey, I don't remember seeing a digital clock on the dresser. It said that it was 2:57 in the morning. I got up and walked to the window. It was dark and quiet until a crack of thunder exploded and then lightening followed. The storm is not over yet? I tried turning on the light switch on the wall but nothing happened. I still smell pancakes so I head downstairs. Still shirtless, Demetri was almost done cooking the rest of the pancakes. I stand at the door not knowing what to do. I guess he had set out new candles on the table because they were bigger than the first ones. "There are some pancakes on the table if you're hungry." He says, not even turning around to see if I am there or not. He must've heard my stomach growling. Misty was sitting on the table enjoying pancakes and milk. I still didn't move from where I was standing.

"Hey, I'm sorry about earlier this morning. I didn't mean to offend you. I kinda thought you were someone else." I said. He sighed and turned to look at me. He had taken his contacts out because his eyes were its normal color.

     "It's okay." He sighed.

The storm never slowed down and by 12pm it was as bad as it was when it first started. While I was sitting on the couch, Demetri was in the basement trying to get the lights back on, and Misty was who knows where. I got up and walked to the basement door.

     "Is Misty down there?"

     "No, why?"

"I thought that she might be down there because she isn't up here." Where did that cat go? I went upstairs and started looking around.

"Misty! Where are you girl?" After about 20 minutes of looking I give up. I go to take a shower in my room. I get undressed and take a hard look at my shoulder that Misty scratched. I peel off the bandage and without touching it trace the four long lines of torn skin. I gently replace the bandage and hop in the shower. I was so thankful that the bandage was waterproof. The hot, steamy water felt so good on my cold skin. I got out and wrapped myself in a towel. I walked out of the bathroom and rummaged through the dresser drawers only to find clothes that were two sizes too big. I looked in the closet and found the same thing. I only wore size 6 and these clothes were size 8 and bigger. I went into some other rooms and found a white tank top and gray sweat shorts. Walking back downstairs I went to see how bad the storm was outside. I opened the front door and saw that the wind had gotten a lot worse and the rain was falling harder. I heard someone sit on the couch.

"How long do you think it will last?" I asked.

"I'm not sure, not too long I hope."

I closed the door and went over to the couch. I sat down and watched the fire blaze in the fireplace. "Do you know where Misty went?" Maybe he might know.

"Haven't seen her since this morning."

"Maybe she went outside. I'm going to go out and look for her." I went upstairs and found my cell phone. Dead. Oh wonderful! What is the point of being stuck in a house if the phones are dead. I put on my hoodie and walked to the front door and opened it. Demetri was still sitting on the couch watching the fire.

"I'll be back soon. Hopefully with Misty."

"Be careful." He looked at me with a blank expressionless face and talked in a monotone. Kinda creepy.

I walked outside and into the rain which was bearable enough for me to jog in and see through. The first place I went to was my own house. I looked around the house and even in the garage. There was a flashlight sitting on my Dad's workbench which I gratefully took with me. As I closed the garage door I noticed a pair of glowing blinking eyes looking at me from a low spot in the bushes.

"Misty? Misty come here girl." They were cat eyes, but not Misty's. I started walking toward the bushes trying to see whose cat it was. Almost all of my neighbors own cats and they let them just roam free all over. If I can see what kind of cat this is then I can tell whose cat it is.

"Here kitty, it's alright, I won't hurt you.  Come here kitty." That cat just wouldn't come. I heard some noise behind me and didn't have enough time to turn around before getting thunked on the head. My lights were out.
