current smoker ex-lover

Your bed is an overflowing ashtray scattered with ashes piled like fragments of ex-passions
The streets are littered with old discarded dog-ends
Some are lightly stained with lipstick after being briefly held to the lips like a sweet kiss
Held gently almost lovingly before being thrown into the abyss
The words I love you escape from your mouth like the smoke you let out when smoking a cigarette
When you say I love you its  like when  you exhale smoke its because you have to
The words are thoughtless and meaningless
You smoke forty a day and have done for a decade
Countless cigarettes have been lit
Countless lies have been told
In the darkness a cigarette gives out a pretty glow
The packets you favour are gold
Tobacco is expensive
We struck up a relationship as easy as you strike a match
The flame blew out and can never be relit
You treated my love like a cigarette you smoked it and then stubbed it out
Your lungs are damaged and so is my heart
I think of you every time a smoker walks past
