Very good question you raise. Since marketing, psychology, biology and several others work together tightly....
I also think it has to do with programming...it needs that many repetitions to program the mind into wanting or thinking it wants something.

As far as self-similar patterns are concerned, my favourite is the Mandelbrot set, most certainly because of its apple-like shape. :-)

The Julia Set has the advantage of variety...
