I Love You Night and Day

"Tell me the story about how the sun loved the moon so much he died every night just to let her breathe." - Makayla Elizabeth Alligire

When it's late afternoon
An alarm goes off for the moon
The sun begins sitting down
While the moon's taking off her gown
They change shifts each day
Always in the very same way
The sun looks with longing and says with great sorrow
"All I can offer you is a painted sky and a promise for tomorrow"
As night creeps into the pale moonlight
Clouds drift off and go out of sight
Without a kiss goodbye
Only a smile and a sigh
As the sun says, "Goodnight,
I'll see you in the morning's light"
The moon begins to blush
In the quiet of the evening hush
And thinks I'll keep him to his word
Then not another sound is heard
Until the morning when the sun begins to rise
As the sleepy moon yawns and rubs her eyes
So full of love the sun's solemn promise he pledged and keeps
A beautiful dreamer the sun watches the moon as she sleeps
All day with blue shadows on her face
If only they could share just one embrace
But this is the way every day is crowned
As they continue to ride this merry-go-round
Keeping hope alive in their dream
For a single ray to kiss just one beam
Until then he shines at seeing her and sings a song
And that's enough to keep her glowing all night long
