Fireflies and Gypsy Moths

The sun goes down in a blaze turning the sky colors in shades of pink and orange
Bringing out the fireflies and gypsy moths
The fishing is not good anymore and the mosquitos bite harder
It’s time to go to the house and let nature have its way
As the colors quickly fade from the sky other insects appear on cue just before dusk
Filling the air with movement in circles and spirals
Everything seems to get more active just before the close of the day
The brown bats come out making loops around the yard in their helter-shelter way
Frogs hidden around the pond edges start to sing and I say that they are calling the snakes
I walk to the house because evening has arrived and we don't belong to the night
I turn on the light as I walk inside closing the door behind me
Leaving the fireflies and gypsy moths to take their chances outside
I bid them goodnight and they bid me sweet dreams as they fly off into the surrounding darkness, the yard alive with noise
