My Nana

Hem & haw, hummingbird
Hovering above the by & by
Nah, nah, nah boo boo
Sis boom bah
A kiss from my Nana
From the feeder to the fed
Sweet nectar in times of torpor
Metabolic rates reach Metaphysic states
Doughty demure Hermit she was
Drawing closer to The Closer
Becoming Emerald
in a moment of grace
on a bed of tranquility
surrounded by loved ones
minus me
a worker bee
registering this regret from a wallflower

I gave her a feather
And she cherished it
above all else
It wasn’t something she needed
Coming from another bird
this foreign feather
Yet she wanted it all the same
An offering of a much greater value
than monetary worth
Priceless
For as a child
My cousins would give me play money
And tell me it was real
I didn’t know no better
So I gave her the feather
And told her it was real
She knew better than I
the currency of sentimentality

Author's Note
This is a poem I wrote after the death of my Nana. She was an important part of my life and I wanted to express her essence in a form of positivity, love and sentimentality. This poem was also an attempt to prove I could write something inspirational and uplifting that she would be proud to keep and cherish.
