Black & White

I stood in the downtown coffee shop
There was music playing live
I was alone.
I could see a limo pull up
Outside a crossed the street
I felt like I was teleported
To the 1920s
I started seeing in black and white
And the indie grunge music
Transformed into swing
They were all dancing
I was alone.
In my daze
A tap fell on my shoulder
In grey tones
I heard ‘do you...’
I filled in the rest of the phrase
‘Want to dance?’
But an odd look
Flashed over their face
And things came into colour
‘Excuse me’
And they moved forward
I was alone.
I decided to take a smoke break
Mostly because I felt like
Being alone in an empty space
Was much less lonely than
Being alone in a full room.
I got a beer
Watched the snow flakes drift
A crossed the night sky
Black and white
Imagination keeping me company
Enveloping me in simplicity
I am alone
And it’s black and white
Love and hate
Filled with gray
Not a good or bad thing
I uncomplicatedly was
In colour or without
There was peace
And I am a piece
Of the universe
Earth
Country
Town
Here
Right now
I plainly am alone.
