Love Has Set (ottava rima)
Now his brief light has set, life is one long
and everlasting sleep, so I'll just make
the least fuss every day - I'll sing my songs
of love and lust and passion; I'll equate
each day to his short lifetime; repeat wrongs
to support needs and frailties; I will wake,
denying possibilities; repose
is not for sleepless ones; I'd kiss his nose...
In photographs upon the mantelpiece,
he stares so luminously; decayed suns
leave me at dusk to shine elsewhere; release
my bleak feelings, before dawn has begun
to find promising new ground: his decease
is the great gift no one would want; I'm numb
and drained of pleasure, though my tears still wet
tomorrow and tomorrow - love has set...
and everlasting sleep, so I'll just make
the least fuss every day - I'll sing my songs
of love and lust and passion; I'll equate
each day to his short lifetime; repeat wrongs
to support needs and frailties; I will wake,
denying possibilities; repose
is not for sleepless ones; I'd kiss his nose...
In photographs upon the mantelpiece,
he stares so luminously; decayed suns
leave me at dusk to shine elsewhere; release
my bleak feelings, before dawn has begun
to find promising new ground: his decease
is the great gift no one would want; I'm numb
and drained of pleasure, though my tears still wet
tomorrow and tomorrow - love has set...
