Shame

the day haunted me
& the night offered no shade

the moon laughed
while i run from demons
the sun witnessed
& turned away

my pain to bare alone
i harbor it
travail as a woman in labor

i give birth to it
& name it
i call him shame

hide him from the world
covet his nature
& feed him my loneliness

he grows
in the empty places
fills the void with his voice
his song is melancholy
& i weep for its beauty

never to be heard
humanity doesn't speak his language
he speaks in riddles

he questions

"mother do you know me?"

i answer

"i bore you of wolves
that ravaged
my virgin soul
tore into it
& injected their torment"

"in agony i birthed you
raised you up
to be a fine man
i will rename you"

"Truth"
