They nest at the end of the road

They turned off the internet
and watched the chaos take hold
this world
went
black

we went down hard
took the phone lines with us
breaking off the receivers on concrete

white and yellow lights
painted the road
and painted lines at night
piles of raked leaves
hues of yellow and orange
waiting to be jumped in
strewn about

uncarved pumpkins wait on
huge painted porches for thanksgiving
with rocking chairs
little libraries
while the carved ones
are melted
no longer distinguishable

passing by dowsing rods
flowing green ferns and red crumbling bricks
lean out onto the slanted sidewalk
to ask me the time

one dogwood tree
barren
pours icicles
illuminated in white
year round
near a stone well with a tiny awning roof
growing moss
that leads to the other side of the earth

Southern Leopard frogs croaking
and Japanese cars whiz by
blasting cold air and Tone loc
boasting golden statue awards
for best safety in class
for mid sizes sedans 2016

9 birdhouses
painted green
blue
yellow
red
and orange
say hello
to everyone that passes
with an inviting red door
like an m night Shyamalan movie
the kid with the back of his head blown off
sticks to the back of my mind
