The Lost Poets Series IMAMU AMIRI BARAKA: Young Soul
The Lost Poets Series:
IMAMU AMIRI BARAKA
'Young Soul'
First, feel, then feel, then
read, or read, then feel, then
fall, or stand, where you
already are. Think
of yourself, and the other-
selves...think
of your parents, your mothers
and sisters, your bentslick
father, then feel, or
fall, on your knees
if nothing else will move you,
Then read
and look deeply
into all matters
come close to you
city boys-
country men
Make some muscle
in your head, but
use the muscle
in your heart.
Poetikmind
"Ole Soul"
Likened, to a fine wine
though, the ridicule
replays as it rewind
thru time...
"You're like an old man"
The wisdom, 'otherworldly'
seems...God-birthed the
thoughts stream...
Thou art blessed
musically stung soul
Yee, are cursed by
the sort of lease it holds...
Cry, ole soul, a sole
heard loud, ever weep
it's wonder, die in slumber
'fore thee Old whole
is at rest, in eternity
six feet under...

The problem with the "Beats" was a sad neglect of the female poets and the black Americans of the time...this is a powerful tribute to one of the neglected P. My favourite poem of Amiri's is, Short Speech to My Friends. Some years back I stumbled on what is now my fav book of poetry, The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry...Baraka...Jack Micheline...d.a. levy...Diane diPrima and of course the great David Lerner, are all in there. A great write my friend.
Cheers...Harry

Harry...bro. gotta say I'm very very impressed you not only heard of this poet
but you know his works... I admit until I got this book, I was quite unaware of a majority of these poets...which was a big reason I decided to do this series...
Having read many of their works now
I realize that if in anyway, reviving their voice shined a light on their forgotten words, maybe it could serve some others on some level...thanks a ton dude, appreciate u truly.

I have some of their cyberspace sites on my Blog Page and intend to add more...this is a time when poetry was very strong indeed, with voices that protested for the people P.
