Cole (Coal)
darker than the dark
his cries echo through shadow
hiding in the depths
he blends in with night
his golden eyes shades of moon
he speaks in meow
creeping out of dark
he slips into her warm hands
too thin and hungry
she shelters his heart
nourishing his small body
with love, hugs and food
he responds in kind
kitty kisses and deep purrs
he is her shadow
he is a beauty
so affectionate and sweet
he sleeps by her side
she knows he is missed
begins searching for owners
a difficult quest
looking takes some time
but he is safely back home,
and she is alone

So warm and sad..! Is the kitten used a metaphor or actually meant in a literal way when you found a stray cat? Either way it's beautifully sad..

Brings to mind the pure instant love of a five year old boy for a stray black kitten he was bringing home, many years ago... Very moving.

I am a true cat lover and kittens are especially warm and affectionate. It is so sweet that he came into your life and touched in his own special way before he moved on. But his other family was probably so glad to have him back. Your poem does him justice.

Darker than the dark, is it a black persian cat with yellow green eyes? it would be a perfect pet even though you just had it for a short time....Ah, just look at the bright side, you have had his love and warmth and it is just good enough for remembering....

I have on more than one occasion rescued a furry family member from the cold and harsh streets. They fill holes in us that we didn't even know where there. And when they go those spaces are more noticeably emptier. Lovely write

what a beautifully crafted rescue story - poor kitty - I did that once before for a stray dog - broke my heart when I had to give him up to his owners - but I had to think of what was best - so I really get the thrust of this poem :-)

My friend...this such a heart-warming piece of compassion and love! Whether metaphorical, or literal, it resonates on a deeply personal level for me.
