Terra firma

Look at you, treading my thoughts
like a sailor on leave makin' a break for shore,
dredging the ocean depths
where the mermaids sing like sirens.

Visions of soft women and hard drinks
crash land on the beach.
The scent of salted perfume
infiltrates a place I've never been to.

I'll be the one at the bar
with the legs that go all the way to heaven,
persuading men that their someone
is not me.

You rode in on a tempest wind,
those rogue waves behind your eyes
crashing into me.
And I was so thirsty.

When the clepsydra runs dry,
and a lonely sea pulls at the sand
beneath your feet,
I won't ask you to stay.

I won't.
