Daydreams

What are daydreams ~
Simply insubstantial things
Memory and imagination mingled
That hope might find her place
Like prayers of child-like faith
Suspended
In innocent sophistication
For my heart still hopes for such
Dreams as you inspire
And dares believe
Such insubstantial things
Have the weight to shape my world
What was it about you which first gave me pause
About the direction of my tomorrows?
Like a strand of hair that lifts and floats
On gentle breeze
across your face
~ Sweet chance ~
And your whole aspect changed
And I saw you anew
And in you
The missing part of me
Like the first leaf’s fall
On still autumn pond
Whose surface trembles beneath the touch
A feeling that ripples towards the farthest shores
A hushed whisper ~
That rejoices.
For I’m a man of splashing brooks
The songs of birds
And sun dappled shady groves
And in thoughts of you
Your voice’s soft as these
And silvered as the dew
And most would laugh to hear me speak this way
Though I speak of things I love
And so too my dreams so sweetly seem
To speak of these in you
For in my heart
Your ever near
Though I would have you nearer.
Could sunrise diamonds cast
On clear mountain lake
Match the sparkle of your eyes?
Or sunset glow to summers day
Speak the warmth of rose
Upon your lips?
Or to feel you wet and yielding
In twined in my embrace
‘Neath
Rainbow misted waterfall
In solitary place…
Such beauty as this I’d share with you
If you’d share yours with me
…on moonlit night
Soft as the scent of southern pine
And fragrant honeysuckle
And love you as slow as sweet southern drawl
Or ever velvet night is long
Steady as the rhythm of summer shower
Yet fierce in sweet surrender
***
There’s beauty in a split rail fence
'Fore the sun burns away the fog of morning
And there’s the beauty of one such as I
Tho’ it’s not as the world sees beauty
So I seek the peace of solitudes
And mountain views
And in imaginings
Always you
Though I’ll never have you
That I might have or hold,
Know –
You’ve never been held so dearly
As in dreams my arms enfold.
And whatever distance stands between
Your heart and mine this day
Stands
In your heart alone
For mine only longs to draw you nearer
Lost in time
Lost in you
Lost in a moment of forever
Lost in every dream my heart would know
But it’s just my imagination…
..again
