The Heart Wants
What is it about you that I just can’t fully shake?
Always something lingering in the shadows
It calls to me when I am weak
I laugh it off when I am able
Still you affect me
My head knows better
It will end just the same
My heart still burns for you
Wants to know if you’ve grown
Have you forgotten us yet?
Why wasn’t it worth the fight?
My heart is functional but never whole
Tells my eyes no one else will ever be as beautiful
My heart lies and tells me there’s still hope
My mind has grown too strong
To fall for such a naïve notion
I know what you are and how you choose to be
As disappointing as it is, it’s the way it will always stay
I still get sad from time to time
Though not nearly as often
When I do it’s fleeting
Even with the ugliness of our final act
I still find beauty in what we had
Days of laughter spilled deep into the night
Catching eyes from across the room and smiling uncontrollably
Speaking to each other with nothing but a glance
The way we made love, like no other
Leaves a tall order for those that come after
To watch us wilt was torturous
Smell of decay as our love lay decomposing in a sea of effortless silence.
Only at the end did we find our words
Hateful and sharp were they
Made to wound and maim instead of heal
The only true communication ever had
A taste in the mouth remains so sour
There is no getting over it
Simply getting on with it
The ties severed and frayed until the day where pride is left behind
Some things are meant to stay broken
We don’t get a second chance
Just the ghosts of romance gone bad
And haunting reminders of a lesson never learned
Always something lingering in the shadows
It calls to me when I am weak
I laugh it off when I am able
Still you affect me
My head knows better
It will end just the same
My heart still burns for you
Wants to know if you’ve grown
Have you forgotten us yet?
