Shadow Soul
A shadow is blown across the city streets
Whipped about here and there like a lost scrap of paper carelessly discarded out of someone's car window
Blown down a twisted sidewalk it slips through the cracks
Down deep below the Earth into the underworld the shadow floats through a tunneling maze.
It hears the rumble of the subways as they snake their way through the ever lasting labyrinth
Sinking ever deeper it see's societies of people who abide here
The shadow soul wonders after these people and listens intently to their life stories and what brought them here.
One is a young girl about twenty who came from Georgia to take a bite out of the big apple and make it as a dancer
She waits tables yet still can't afford the rent
Others are schizophrenic and have fallen through societies cracks much like the shadow soul
They shout out obscenties calling endlessly calling to an unhearing world.
Some just can't make it in the world above due to drug problems or other such afflictions
The soul feels for them and connects with them on a deep level yet she moves on.
The shadow soul is endlessly lost in the tunneling maze
Searching for an anchor to bring it back to the top and end its wandering.
It has been cast on a seemingly unending quest to be a whole soul
No longer a mere ghost full of festering emptiness
Emptiness caused by holes shot through its soul.
Each time it tries to tap into the world above it is scorched and burned
To be whole sigh to be a whole person
Tapping into the pain inside itself
Endless corridors, paths, sidewalks traveled leading nowhere but a massive circle
Frustrated the soul cries out
Tears fail to come she can't cry anymore.
