Taking Pride for a Ride
So much Pride
So little intellect
Think about what
You are really claiming
Gay Pride Proud to be Gay?
Irish Pride Proud to be Irish?
Trans Pride Proud to be a Transgender?
Black Pride Proud to be Black?
Asian Pride Proud to be Asian?
Jewish Pride Proud to be Jewish?
There are so many more
Organisations and movements
That are proud to announce their pride
Pride, if felt at all. should
be for something you have
achieved not simply an accident
of birth or a personal choice
they say;
Pride comes before a fall
Let’s hope so

I think pride can take a man down faster than a bullet at times.

David...one of the things that I admire, about your poetry, is that it challenges your readers to think beyond the initial piece! And whether, or not, they agree/disagree with your thoughts, or opinions, or expressed feelings (emotions), they find that your pieces have left quite an impression. This one is no exception. In my mind, i am still recalling all those the concepts i was ever taught about pride-- the negative and the positive...the moral..and the psychological aspects.
There are--as you mentioned--several types of pride...self-pride, which has its own good and bad connotations, and national/ethnic(heritage) pride, which can also be regarded as positive or negative...depending on personal pov. As far as National pride, for some it provides a sense of belonging that arises from that shared set of customs and language and history that has deep rooted ancestral meaning for these individuals.
I grew up identifying with my Irish lineage, because it gave me that same feeling of belonging. So, in the spirit of friendly disagreement, i do value my Irish roots, and.i do 'take my Irish pride for a ride'...coz it became--(and remains)--such an integral part of who i am. :)
Thank you for posting another thought-provoking piece.! I truly enjoyed the read!

I googled "Pride organisations" and then "Pride flags" - there are thousands of pride groups. I am proud I was the first person in my family to go to college and to walk a different path, these prides result from achievements I am Scottish, I love my country, I am not proud to be Scottish - I am happy to be Scottish - being Scottish was an accident of birth - I think that's what I was trying to say (lol) I think the word pride is just misused today - I hope that makes sense :-)

David you have a brilliant mind
though I too have pride in my roots
but this makes one stop to ponder
what we are proud about..
wonderful..

are you proud or are you happy or pleased? I used to be a proud Scotsman until I looked into my country's history. I like living in Scotland and I like being Scottish. Pride is one of those words that is so ambiguous or maybe it's just evolved that way. glad it stirred the pot :-) - ehugs on the way :-)

I agree, David. While it is good to be proud of yourself for living your convictions, how one demonstrates it is different entirely. If you're going to be loud and proud, be proud of others for their accomplishments and stop flaunting yourself. Actions of Love and Compassion toward others demonstrates so much more than a prideful attitude in the face of circumstance.
