ODE TO A MODERN LOVER
I noticed
You were in a hurry
Not watching where you go
ear buds burrowed in too deep
head bowed to smart-phone glow
Pavement slick from morning downpour
Black Wingtips lost their footing
Witness a feat n’er seen before
Falling body still texting
Cue Samuel Barber’s
“Adagio for String”
As in slow motion,
phone slips from your grasp
From your mouth emits
A little girl scream
From the crowd an audible gasp
With a mighty splash
There it lay motionless
In a puddle deep and muddy
Kneeling down you pick him up
“I tried to save you li’l buddy”
Amid the crowd of somber faces
a barely audible whisper
“Oh come on, give me a break”
It’s just a stink’in device
Take it home, dry it off,
Put it in a bag of rice.

When the phone goes awol
from the supposed safety of well trained digits
Then It's a slow mo life or death race for retrieval in silent prayer on its body still intact
Very topical relatable write

Thank you Rose! Yes I've had a device fly into the toilet, post flush, thank goodness. It was never quite the same after that. Thank you for reading and your encouraging comment.

Although there have been times when I thought about taking a hammer to my phone, my daughter has dropped phones in toilets, dropped and cracked and even ran over her phone ... lol so I can relate.

Thanks for the read,, Jemac. There is a lot of drama generated by thesr unfortunate events. Wow, driven over...that'll require more than a bag of rice.

i burst out laughing at the inclusion of one of my favorite pieces of music... it does set the perfect tone for the anxious grappling & grasping at air to prevent my precious meeting the ground.
i wholeheartedly agree with this one, mon ami. i have learned to put my iLover aside for a few days & go off the grid.. inanimate objects are surprisingly demanding

The Barber piece was a little gem I added just for you :) I'm glad you read this piece. I love the idea of going off the grid. We did just fine when I was a biy and younh adult with no devices. Now we get nervous if we leave tge house without one. Has a dance ever been choreographed to "Adagio for Strings?"

Thank you Quill. I thinks it lends an aire of comic solemnity to the piece. I am glad you enjoyed the read.
