A Wake for the First Time
We both started this fire
I stayed until the embers burned out
Sifting through ash with stick in hand
Searching for a spark
The flames are gone
Smoke rises to meet the stars
Heat still radiates from the source
I stare at the moon
Hoping that you are too
And not the backlight of your phone
If we stare at the same point
We may find our hearts once more
And not feel so alone
Dew forms on blades of grass
The chill air moves in now
Firmly planted on the back steps
Hopelessly listening for
The tires of your car
Crushing stones in the driveway
Returning to further the plot
The cars just drive past
Each one faster than the last
On their way to inviting places
Here in the dark
Sounds of breaking hearts
Fill the widest of open spaces
Retrieving my shovel
Scatter ash as if it were remains
Speak some kind words
Pretending you heard them
A tearful goodbye escapes my lips
As wind carries "you" away
A perfect end to an imaginary life
I stayed until the embers burned out
Sifting through ash with stick in hand
Searching for a spark
The flames are gone
Smoke rises to meet the stars
Heat still radiates from the source
I stare at the moon
Hoping that you are too
And not the backlight of your phone
If we stare at the same point
We may find our hearts once more
And not feel so alone
Dew forms on blades of grass
The chill air moves in now
Firmly planted on the back steps
Hopelessly listening for
The tires of your car
Crushing stones in the driveway
Returning to further the plot
The cars just drive past
Each one faster than the last
On their way to inviting places
Here in the dark
Sounds of breaking hearts
Fill the widest of open spaces
Retrieving my shovel
Scatter ash as if it were remains
Speak some kind words
Pretending you heard them
A tearful goodbye escapes my lips
As wind carries "you" away
A perfect end to an imaginary life
