Lost Whispers

As lost as a whisper in a crowded conversation
Even the most eloquent words couldn’t save us
Haunting the depths of my mind
Her presence a permanent fixture in memory
I cannot yet smile when I think of her
A twisted smirk is all that can be managed
It is not sadness nor hate nor contempt
A mixture of curiosity and disappointment
Like a book, lost before finishing
Or one with an undesirable end
