Fear Less Maddi
Papi says be fearless
In everything I do
That I can be a great person
But I wonder if that's true
He says, See that girl there
Standing up to that huge bull
She's staring him right in the eye
Hair tossed back her heart is full
I ask him is he ever scared
He gives a sigh and starts to think
There were my times of doubt
Like my first time in an ice rink
There was the time as a boy I drove a huge truck
Through the streets of New York City
I dived in a pool but couldn't swim
Then tried on a beach in Atlantic City
I played too rough when I was in school
Got tackled by some boys and broke my shoulder
Then another time I broke my toe
Hopping from boulder to boulder
I've been sacred with just about everything I've done
Silly as it sounds
That's what makes it fun
To face your fears and know that you've won
I asked Papi who taught him such things
He says my father of course as he stuck
out his hand
Then we grabbed our boards and carried them over the sand
In everything I do
That I can be a great person
But I wonder if that's true
He says, See that girl there
Standing up to that huge bull
She's staring him right in the eye
Hair tossed back her heart is full
I ask him is he ever scared

You're a wonderful father, SanPedro. Maddi will grow up fearless in Love and everything else she faces because of her parent's influence.

I found the aspect of generational 'support' and parenting comes over really clear and heart-warming - like that a lot.
(I read first line of penultimate stanza as "I've been scared ..." given the preceding stanzas about risks taken; then I went back, re-read it and saw it was "I've been sacred ...". It could be either, I guess?)

Thank you for your support on this ... I wrote it as 1. Part of the poem a day challenge and 2. To celebrate the anticipated birth of my lil one ... she came today - April 16th at 1:25 PM ... I'm happy with the way the verb tense works but I'll examine it again - with an editorial eye after I come back to earth

To stand and face adversity with strength and confidence....for out of fears conquered, courage is born, and the only failures are found in not trying.
My friend, with parents teaching her these valuable Life lessons, Maddi will undoubtedly be successful at anything she puts her mind to! She is so fortunate--to be sure!!
Such endearing, and inspirational ink--indeed!

somewhat/maybe completely off topic.... have you read about the Raging Bull artist who wants the Fearless Girl removed? the gist is that he says the Fearless Girl completely changes the meaning behind his work (the Raging Bull is supposed to represent the resilient spirit of the american people) and he's not happy about it. which i can understand. thoughts? i realize i'm kinda picking your brain and don't really know you AND you have a new baby. so feel free not to answer. :)

Thank you for your comment! It made me reread the poem and it all made me smile, remembering things with my dad, and thinking about the good times to come with my daughter.
