Say Goodbye

Goodbye to bike rides.
And books on rainy days.
Groceries on Saturday mornings.
Walking Pumpkin through the rain.
Befriending stray cats
Counting cars as they pass
Sleepovers in the basement
Late nights with insomnia
Middle school days
Listening to baseball on the radio
Cruel neighborhood kids stealing tulips
Get off the grass
Watch the skinny cat lay in the sun.
The wooden swing
Cracked the back board
Standing on it.
Goodbye to the fort
And the guy in the woods
Was he a stalker or not?
Goodbye to the neighbor’s dogs.
Quiet summer nights
Screeching tire wheels in the early morning
Baseball games
Bottom of the ninth...
Are they winning?
Goodbye to the funny old man
And the loving old lady
Goodbye to weekends
And couch forts
Cigarette smoke
Goodbye....
Both are gone
And everything is a just a memory now
The years have come and gone
Things leave
We move away
And we grow old
And they die

But we can’t go back

Goodbye
