Thinning the herd
Jimmy coughs up black mucus
Almost choking in its wake
Alice wears a scarf, she has no hair
She used to have breasts, now nothing there
Alex can no longer control his bowels
No dignity lying in his own shit and piss
Karen hopes the rope is secure to the beam
As she contemplates why everyone hates her
Frank hopes he has enough courage left
To put one in the chamber and blow his mind
Lucy is five and is looking forward to Santa
Her mum worries, the leukaemia might kill her first
Bobby is six he has only half a heart
It’s surprising he has lived this long
Elizabeth went on a vacation to Paris
ISIL repeatedly shot her in the head
Ivan started a new job on 9 / 11
He died in the rubble of the second tower
Diseases, Natural disasters, murders
Torture, war, terrorism, inhumanity
Human death and suffering
Looking for a reason
Looking for a meaning
Looking for a purpose
Looking for causation
Then it hit me;
It’s only God
Thinning the herd

Lmao. The evil is actually good, we've got it all wrong! The loving sweet kind compassionate God knows best. This poem entertained me and reminded me of how people literally will justify anything especially in the name of religion. One of those depressing realities.

Both "good" and "evil" were created by the same source for the purpose of experience and choice. That someone has a choice to be evil is free-will whether we like it or not. That another is a victim "seemingly" not of their own freewill is a matter of knowledge and perception regarding those who sacrifice themselves for the greater good of humanity. Their death raises awareness that can serve as a natural catalyst for the evolvution of our species. Some refer to this cycle as a religious one, others don't. Neither is right or wrong in their choice of belief. It's all relative experience that can be a depressing reality to the ignorant ( not implying you're ignorant).

Just as it is someone's choice to be evil it is also someone's choice to not condone it. I don't know that I agree that either was created for experience and choice, I think they just exist. I don't seek purpose on the matter. I do however think that most evil is created by environment, parental type influences or lack thereof and personality type. Some people such as psychopaths have a tendency to gravitate towards evil with lacking empathy but I still wonder how much of that could be corrected or managed if caught early enough. That though is personal opinion and up for debate. But my point still stands that many people will justify evil in any way that they can because if you put a positive spin on something horrific it then makes it acceptable. It's a way for them to cope and stay secure in their beliefs. Anything else like accepting evil as plain evil threatens said beliefs and that is what they fear above all else.

Re. Thinning the herd
David this is a very astute observance of the world. It's all part of the natural course of Life for all sentient beings. The suffering and seeming injustice can be difficult to bear at times.

Random suffering - a part of the human condition I find hardest to come to terms with.
Your poem reminded me of one I wrote a couple of years ago, called "Suffering Stumped"; I have just posted it. It doesn't contain an answer, but a similar confusion and questioning about (apparently I hope) meaningless violence.

Good versus evil. The right to be wrong, the wrong way to be right. I think individual perception is the reason our world goes around. Besides that a herd of individuals always needs thinning. It's always good to keep an open mind. Much love and mad respect,

People say you shouldn't blame god - but I do, if he exists at all he certainly isn't love :-)
