A Bright Future

Your future is not determined by your past
it's up to you how long the guilt will last.
Bury the past, but don't forget the lessons!
It's okay to forgive yourself of indiscretions.

Looking back on my life suddenly I realize,
that the "Big Picture" I didn't always analyse.
Mostly living in that moment in time,
even going as far as committing crime.

I was taught to be truthful, but I usually lied
my whole life I schemed and connived.
Only looking out for myself, number one,
just seeking a lifetime of thrills and fun.

Although I was taught to be faithful
it was as if cheating became my ritual.
With no regard for hurting another
in my selfishness I made many suffer.

These thought ran through my head....
(Drugs and alcohol are okay they're not bad
I know, I know alcohol nearly killed my dad.
I can use drugs and alcohol for recreation
I won't become addicted to pain medication.)

My mind convinced me I could quit at will.
I'm fully in control, remember it's freewill.
Addiction isn't real, it will never rule me.
yet my life was full of chaos that left debris.

You may wonder if you can truly start over
it's like your life is broke and in foreclosure.
You're emotions overdrawn and bankrupt,
it seems impossible for life to reconstruct.

Does this story conclude with no victory,
and our lives end hopeless and bitterly?
What if our actions are meaningless?
If that were true wouldn't we be guiltless.

The first thing we must do is get up,
and stop our wrong doings abrupt.
The true key to freedom is honesty,
God's forgiveness is pure, such generosity.

Turning from is step one, asking is step two.
Step three is believing what He said He'd do.
A brand new creature you begin to become,
all because you had faith to take step one.

Don't let the devil defeat you if you fall,
get up and give your sponsor a call.
Remember life change is a process after all.
Some days will be easy while others hard,
beware as temptation will bombard.
Know victory comes don't drop your guard.
