How I Became An Online Poet
The first time in a chatroom paled
To what would later be regaled
A life of cyber stories told
The lovers in my poems bold
That started in a chatroom greet
With each becoming passion's meet
And soon in several days attend
Where I was drawn my nights to spend
Inside a white room with four walls
No doors, no chairs, the echoed halls
The words I saw scroll up a screen
Became the voices that would mean
That this, a new reality
Was now how I would gauge for me
A world I'd feel emotions raw
To vindicate the things I saw
And act upon the trust I gave
Not realizing such a knave
Knew where I came from innocent
Has little changed in their intent
Though rooms of chat for me are done
I still rely on everyone
The lovers, friends, both old & new
Who most are also writers too
I can't believe the other way
Was better from back in the day
Because years since I post on site
Where poetry's the place to write
For my addiction's tempered with
The love I have for each wordsmith

I drifted from rooms to words too- the words when beaten into shape carry so much more weight

They do indeed! Thank you, SweetO, for coming in and sharing that with me. xo
Re. How I Became An Online Poet
"Because for years I post onsite
Where poetry's the place to write
For my addiction's tempered with

it was with photo's first for me
then with forged words enhanced I'd see
then, too, my own I'd grace with words
so that the colors could be heard
then to the DEEP I found a way
and learned to dance in tigers' play
I am so glad the cyber highways gave a place for our paths to cross... and travel down the road awhile...
Great writing, jadey

Thank you, tomcat, for the wonderful share, another facet of you. And I'm so glad you enjoyed my account in verse. Btw, I made a small edit of that stanza:
"Because years since I post on site
Where poetry's the place to write"

NIce! I kind of wish everyone had the time to share how they became online poets, especially the ones as prolific as you are! IMO it takes a powerful combination of bravery, arrogance (the good kind), and foolishness. Kudos.

Thanks so much. I appreciate you stopping by for a read, and letting me know your thoughts on this piece. I think I understand what you mean, but when it comes to me, I don't think there's a "good kind" of arrogance? but it's probably a parallel word. Now if only I could think which word. I should check my thesaurus.

I've never been in a chat room and came here as the crow flies. I've made a few friends, and am amazed by the talent, yours included. I'd rather read, comment and maybe do some personal messaging at DUP than hang out in the various rooms available, although it wouldn't hurt to visit one of them at some point, just to see what's what. Thanks for the lowdown on your metamorphosis from chatter to poet, Jade. It's a clever account, neatly worded and rhymed.

Thank you for sharing with me, my friend. And yes, like we talked about, the first place I knew to go once my parents got Internet access was to MSN Chat (which closed down years ago) where I began my cyber existence, though I was already a writer/poet by then. I didn't know literature websites even existed till much later. I have no idea what the chatrooms are like these days.

Such a great story, Jade,
I'm so glad you shared it. Makes me wonder
about all the other stories here on du.
As for myself, I came to reconect with what was lost along the way,
only to discover how much a part if me it truly was and how I missed
it for so long. I've found so much more than mere poetry here...

And that's the way it is, to find a facet of one's self once left behind or to yet discover. I'm glad you enjoyed this part of my journey which never came to me in verse till now. My gratitude for your lovely share & express, and for coming back.

there are pleasant things to find on theses sites,
fascinating writers with stories to tell,
comps that are wars of words;
& sometimes good poetry...
it's a definitive memoir...

Thank you, John, and yes, exactly as you've stated: sometimes good poetry.

This took me down memory lane 20 years into the past. I got online because I was hoping to find a place where poets gathered and became friends and lovers. The old AOL chat rooms were the best, but ICQ was pretty cool too... cyber was new and exciting but after a few years I realized I wasn't getting the satisfaction I had been seeking. I stopped chatting and found a half dozen poetry websites that showed promise but they kept fizzling out and disappearing along with my poetry and friends who had never bothered to give each other contact info beyond that site. So little survives from he days of chat rooms... all of us were writers, being as poetic as we could be, trying to find ways to rhyme within our fantasies. And here we are, years later, looking for love within the land of poet trees... the apple doesn't fall far...
Nicely done Jade!
