Ghost of a Wine Glass Past

I've been drunk about a week now,
Waving my hands and shouting
"It seems pretty soon the earth's going to fall into the sun."
It's just the opposite.
Precisely at that point it vanished;
The colossal significance of that light vanished forever.

Five years next November,
Solemn as if that sudden extinction still haunted
Just as if it were five years ago.
Irritable now with the fading of ale
We possess some deficiency in common which makes us unadaptable.

Well, there I was, way off my ambitions
On my way to get roaring drunk,
Looking around wildly, as if the past were
Borne ceaselessly into the past.

"His life had been confused and disordered since then. But if he could once return to a certain starting place and go over it all slowly, he could find out what that thing was..."
